What should we do during the Ethiopian Open Access Week?

The maxim that “knowledge wants to be free” is attributed to an Indian open access proponent, Subbiah Arunachalam. It is not surprising that India now stands as one of the most open access friendly countries in the world. Such change, however, has not come over night as the likes of Arunachalam had to work hard to do their part instead of sitting down and wait for others to do the work.…

OA, a gift of developing countries.

The idea developed by Mr. McLuhan, in the late sixties, that the world would become a sort of "global village" is a myth. Even if the

idea may seem attractive, it is clear that the globalization of communication

Google Doodle and Other Activities

Here at the Centre for Research Communications we've been thinking of ways that we can help to promote Open Access Week. One idea we had to raise awareness of the week for a wider audience was to propose to Google that they use OA week as a subject for a Google Doodle for their main home page or the home page of Google Scholar. Since Google will receive large numbers of suggestions for Doodles it would help if the OA community could join us in lobbying… Continue

OA, Free Culture and (hopefully) a campus-wide conversation

I've been having conversations with various people about Open Access. As an academic librarian, OA is an issue that resonates strongly with me. As an academic librarian at a liberal arts university with the traditional-aged undergraduate population as the majority user community, I've also been spending quite a bit of time thinking about how the values stressed within the OA movement can be best communicated and made… Continue

OA Week contests

Here at SUNY Buffalo we're thinking of having two OA Week contests. An OA Haiku contest for students, and a contest to name our institutional repository for faculty/staff and grad students. Anyone have experience running similar contests and have insight to share?
