Event Description

George Mason University, University Libraries, is sponsoring a panel discussion about publishing in open access journals and other web-based venues. Dr. Joseph Serene, Treasurer/Publisher for the American Physical Society, will discuss the first year of the society's launch into open access publishing, offered to authors as an alternative to the traditional model. BioMed Central's Robert Schatz, North American Sales Manager, will talk about the sustained success of BMC's "gold" open access publishing model. Dr. Daniel Cohen, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, will describe PressForward, a site hosted by CHNM that serves as a platform for sharing, compiling, and publishing scholarship. Economic aspects of open access publishing and its repercussions on the industry and on library purchasing power will be presented by Dr. Omar Al-Ubaydli, Assistant Professor of Economics at George Mason University. A lively Q&A will accompany the discussion.
