Research in the making: watch 10 journal articles as they get written, openly, on the web

Implemented as an undergraduate class in Temple University Japan’s School of Communications and Theatre, the project started on Sept. 1st, 2010 and will run until December 1st, 2010. On the way, we will need to upset the academic publishing applecart quite a bit: writing papers openly on the web, attracting peer commentary on the drafts as they get written, pushing the limits of text re-use between papers and questioning the status of author. This is play, but this is very serious play.

The project website: http://jjtok.io/3m10p is a repository of our ongoing work. There, for all to see, each student is posting successive drafts of their articles, starting with a rough proposal, experimental prototypes, … all the way to final paper. Week after week, this is research in the making.

The custom blog format of the website uses the WordPress plugin CommentPress, developed at the Institute for the Future of the Book. The plugin allows everybody (yes, that means you who’s reading this now!) to post comments on the articles as they get written, in an attempt to experiment with a new model of academic reviewing. Whether you are a professional researcher, a scholar interested in academic publishing, a practitioner of the fields covered by one of our studies (call center industry anyone?), or simply an interested passer-by, please join the conversation, and help the project move forward with your comments.
