Open Access Week @JKUAT

 The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Library participated in Open Access Week (OAW) for the first time in 2010. The concept was introduced to JKUAT by Ms. Jane Gikandi who was the then Head of the ICT section and has moved on to a different university. The library entered the INASP OAW 2010 competition and won a grant of 300$. This helped us in printing of promotional materials.

JKUAT library partners with JKUMUN students

The JKUAT library in partnership with JKUAT students has previously participated in the OAW 2010 and 2011 with activities such as workshops, exhibitions, competitions and a beauty pageant which has now become an annual event. This year the library will be working with JKUMUN students to create awareness of the JKUAT Institutional Repository which is based on the Open Access model of publishing. JKUAT open acceess week a success

The JKUAT open access week finally took place!! We were able to successfully carry out all the planned activities. The facilitators of the workshops on plagiarism, referencing tools and web web 2.0 did a superb job. The workshops were very informative. They elicited interesting debates such as whether the students were ready to have their work run through the plagiarism detector softwares in preparation for uploading on the proposed JKUAT institutionary repository. The JKUAT library is working with JKUAT students to come up with ideas for participation in the OA week. They plan to come up with fun events to help advocate for OA. They have already given suggestions for our proposed OA institutional repository. They are so creative!!! Its fun working with them.
