Event Description

As part of International Open Access Week, Brunel invites all academics and students to a conference which brings together industry professionals and Brunel researchers to talk about their commitment to making openness in research a reality.

The event will be livestreamed and the link is availablehttp://livestream.com/Brunel/andbeyond

Please come if you can make it in person, however - there will be lunch and coffee!

Speakers will be:

Cameron Neylon, Curtin University

Cameron Neylon is a one-time biomedical scientist who has moved into the humanities via Open Access and Open Data advocacy. His research interests include how to make the internet more effective as a tool for scholarship. He writes and speaks regularly on scholarly communication, the design of web based tools for research, and the need for policy and cultural change within and around the research community.

Mike Taylor, Digital Science

An expert researcher in alternative metrics, Mike is Head of Metrics Development at Digital Science. He has previously worked as part of Elsevier’s R&D group and in the Metrics and Analytics Team. Mike works with many community groups, including FORCE11, RDA and NISO.

Veerle Van den Eynden, UK Data Archive

Veerle manages the Research Data Management (Producer Support) section at the UK Data Archive . This section promotes and provides guidance, support and training on data management, data management planning and data sharing to researchers and data producers, in order to promote good data practices in research and to optimise data sharing opportunities.

Teresa Jones & Stephen Hanney, Health Economics Research Group

Teresa and Stephen will be discussing Open Access, global research impact, and tracing generations of citations. Brunel’s Health Economics Research Group (HERG) have had a programme of research for over 20 years developing and applying approaches to assessing the wider impact of health research; collaborations on this with WHO, informed HEFCE’s approach to impact case studies, and provided evidence to defend the public research budget.

Nana Anokye, Institute of Environment, Health and Societies

Nana is a public health economist and will discussing his experiences with open data at Brunel. He has developed economic models for a range of public health interventions, some of which have been used in the NICE Guidance and is passionate about communicating research and supporting research careers.
