Kennedy Library is hosting three events in recognition of Open Access Week:

Visualizing Open Data Workshop
Tuesday, October 20, Kennedy Library, Active Learning Lab (216B); 2pm-3pm
Join Kennedy Library Data & GIS Specialist Russ White for a hands-on workshop combining Open Data with free and open-source tools to visualize, analyse and share data and insights. Learn easy-to-use tools such as Plot.ly and CartoDB to create beautiful, interactive graphics and maps that can be shared on the web.

Professor Laura Hosman: SolarSPELL
Thursday, October 22, Kennedy Library, 111H, 11:00-noon
Professor Hosman (Political Science, STS) will introduce and demonstrate her project SolarSPELL, a Solar Powered Educational Learning Library designed to simulate an online experience for students and teachers at rural, remote schools with no electricity or internet connectivity. The project was created in collaboration with Cal Poly students, and the library's content is entirely open access.

The officers of the Cal Poly Free Culture Club will lead a discussion on the status of textbooks in higher education. They will present their findings on what has led to the exorbitant pricing today and offer their perspective on how we can use open access to make education more accessible to students.
